The Do’s and Don’ts during Immigration Interview


Among the many immigration procedures you have to undergo, immigration interview is perhaps the most nerve-wracking of them all. Interview, whether done face to face or over the phone, is a part of the process you have to undergo. It is important that you prepare yourself for this encounter.  Not all interviews are carried the same. The mood of the interview would vary on the personality or character of the immigration services official that would handle the interview. You have to remember that it is the job of immigration officers to establish whether you have anything in your present situations or in your background that would prevent you from obtaining the immigration status you want. The Do’s
1.    Study the data that are written in the forms and documents you submitted at immigration. It will leave a good impression if you could answer the questions that pertain the data written in your forms and documents without confusion or extensive referencing.

2.    Bring the original copies of all your document and forms.

3.    Be ready for answers personal questions.

4.    Follow the instruction given by the immigration officer. If the immigration officer wishes to interview family members separately, go with it. Do not contradict.

5.    Listen attentively and provide an answer only to the question that is being asked.

6.    If you are not fluent in speaking English or do not understand English very well, bringing an interpreter with you is advised.

7.    Dress appropriately. Immigration interview is a formal meeting, dress accordingly. Wearing business attire is encouraged.

8.    Be on time. Immigration officers are a busy person, they will not wait for you. If you fail to show up at your appointed time, you may have to go through another process of getting an appointment for another interview. Plus, being late will leave a negative impression.

9.    Be calm. If you don’t know the answer, admit your ignorance. If you don’t understand the question ask the interviewer to repeat or rephrase the question. It is important to be truthful, but if you have to lie practice your answer so you would sound truthful to avoid suspicion.
